TENS

TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. A TENS Unit is an electrotherapy device used by physical therapists, and other clinicians, to help patients manage pain. A TENS unit is used in conjunction with TENS electrodes that are placed on the area of pain. TENS therapy is most often used, but not limited to areas such as the back, shoulder, neck, and knee.

Electrotherapy is used to treat all types of pain, from acute to chronic conditions. It can allow a person with chronic pain to tolerate activities they may otherwise not be able to handle. For example, a person with chronic knee pain may be able to exercise or walk without pain.
